is chivalry really dead?

OK so I've had this blog for a while and never wrote anything, but i felt a bit inspired tonight while i was sitting at home, bored in my room reading an issue of Spin magazine on a friday night.

I came across an article that mentioned a song by Liz Phair, called "Fuck and Run." I downloaded it and decided to read the lyrics, which I believe most women my age today can totally relate to....
(check them out here if you are not familiar with the song). It's about hooking up with a guy and knowing he's not right for you and that no relationship will come out of it.

The song poses the question..

"And whatever happened to a boyfriend
The kind of guy who tries to win you over?
And whatever happened to a boyfriend
The kind of guy who makes love 'cause he's in it?"

Honestly, I dont think i have EVER had a guy take me out on a 'real' date and try to win me over in the traditional sense. Seriously! I feel like most 20-something guys these days just ask girls to 'hang out' rather than take them out on dates. And then you also never know if 'hang out' is just a code word for 'hey lets hook up'. That's always disappointing to find out, if you're expecting more than that.

Then again, I'm not really the type who needs a fancy restaurant or anything, but still, I would not mind having a guy put a little effort in. And now that everyone communicates on facebook or myspace, its just like another element of a guy not having to put as much effort in, since you can message and chat on there, rather than getting a phone call. Blah!!

Looking at people I know who have been in or are currently in relationships, almost all of them have started with some kind of random, drunken hook-up! No dinners, no movies, no dates. I mean the relationships usually turn out fine, I'm not saying this ruins it, but it just goes to show how things have changed! Why can't guys just try to sweep us off our feet once in a while?

Or is this just the type of guys I know?? I have to admit I tend to hang out with 'alternative' style people, artsy, hipsters as most would call us. But really, I dont think this should matter all the much, guys all want the same thing!

so... are dating & chivalry really dead?
